Bovine serum albumin (BSA) (50 mg/ml) was incubated at 37°C for 24 h with pyruvate and 100  mM sodium cyanoborohydride in 0.2 M sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.8), followed by dialysis  against PBS. The CEL content (2.6 mol CEL/mol BSA) was determined by amino acid analysis.
