Ordering With a Permit

Items that contain certain ingredients from certain animals (including cows and chickens/eggs) need to have a permit to import into the United States. In some instances, the customer is required to obtain an end-user permit (VS 16-3 Import Permit Application). In this case, the customer will need to apply for and receive an import permit directly from the US government regulatory agency APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service). The application is completed through an online portal and may require registration with login.gov. The permit is valid for one year. The cost changes annually, and renewal is typically 50% the cost of the new permit.

To get started, follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://efile.aphis.usda.gov/s/vs-permitting-assistant
  2. Select the following:
    1. Movement type: Import
    2. Search for materials (for collagen/gelatin products, this is “[collagen/gelatin] as an Ingredient in a Product”; for other materials, select what is appropriate
    3. For collagen/gelatin products: Animal origin: “Bovine Cow or Bison”; for others, select what is appropriate
    4. Intended Use: “Research”
    5. Country of Origin: “Japan” most likely—but maybe another country. Please contact us to clarify if you are uncertain
  3. Click “Search”
  4. Select attributes, which may include
    1. Cosmetic in Retail-Ready, etc: No
    2. Finished Human Food Product: No
    3. Can obtain certification: No
  5. Click “Add material”
  6. See that you need “VS 16-3 Import Permit Application”. Please note the fee that you will need to pay and proceed to login.
  7. Please proceed with the permit application process. If you have product questions regarding purification, etc, please contact us.

Please note that:
•   The end-user address must match exactly the ship-to address of the order
•   The permit may take 4-6 weeks to be approved
•   A person, not an entity, must register with login.gov
