CosmoSonic™ II Ultrasonic Cell Disruptor: Fully Customizable

Because all accessories are sold separately, you are able to customize your unit to best fit your lab's workflow. Additionally, if you decide that you would like to process samples of a different size, it is as easy as simply ordering alternate accessories.

Base Unit
Which base unit should you get? This will depend on how many samples you want to run at the same time. Choose between 3 base unit types of varying capacities (Types 6, 12, or 24) depending on your sample volume and number of samples that you want to process simultaneously.

Gear Plates and Silver Tube Attachments
Which blue gear plates should you get? Do you need silver tube attachments? This will depend on what size tubes you are processing and whether you are using a Type 6 or a Type 12/24. You need silver tube attachments if you are using 0.5mL or 1.5mL tubes. Type 6 and Type 12/24 use different gear plates and silver tube attachments due to the diameter of the disruption unit. Type 12 and Type 24 take the same size blue gear plates and silver tube attachments, but you will need two of each accessory for Type 24.

Resonance Rods and O-Rings
Do you need resonance rods? Should you buy extra O-Rings? Resonance rods are necessary if you are using 10, 15, or 50mL tubes. Resonance rods are specific to the brand of tube that you are using. If you are using 0.5mL and 1.5mL microtubes, you do not need resonance rods. Each resonance rod comes with one O-Ring--there is no set time when you need to replace your O-Ring, but if it becomes damaged, it is necessary to replace it.

Tubes
Where can you find the tubes that you need? Cosmo Bio USA sells 1.5mL and 10mL tubes. Other size tubes must be purchased from the manufacturer or their distributor. If you need help determining whether the tubes you have are appropriate, please let us know.

Cold Water Circulator
Do you need to buy the cold water circulator? To maintain an even temperature and proper sound wave dispersion, you will need to have constantly circulating cold water in your disruption unit. We sell a unit that is easily attached and fully compatible with the CosmoSonic II.

Step-by-step instructions for selecting the base unit and your accessories:

recommended volume max tubes max tubes max tubes
tube size min max Type 6 Type 12 Type 24
0.5 ml 50 100 12 24 48
1.5 ml 100 300 12 24 48
10 ml 0.5 2 6 12 24
15 ml 0.5 2 6 12 24
50 ml 3 20 3 6 12

Please follow the steps below to evaluate what unit and accessories that you need.

STEP 1: Selecting Tube Size
What size sonication containers should you use? It depends on your sample volume.

Sonication Container Recommended
Sample Volume
Sample Range
0.5mL microtube 100uL 50 - 150uL
1.5mL microtube 250uL 125 - 375uL
10mL tube 2mL 1 - 3mL
15mL tube 3mL 1.5 - 4.5mL
50mL tube 20mL 10 - 30mL

STEP 2: Machine Type
What type of CosmoSonic II unit should you use? It depends on your tube size and the number of samples that will be run simultaneously.

  Tube Size
 Number of Samples 0.5mL 1.5mL 10mL 15mL 50mL
1 to 3 Type 6 Type 6 Type 6 Type 6 Type 6
4 to 6 Type 6 Type 6 Type 6 Type 6 Type 12
7 to 12 Type 6 Type 6 Type 12 Type 12 Type 24
13 to 24 Type 12 Type 12 Type 24 Type 24
25 to 48 Type 24 Type 24

STEP 3: Equipment Required
Now that you know what size/number of samples you will be processing and what machine you need, what equipment is required for your set-up? Note that not all set-ups require the all types of equipment.

Sonication Container Size Gear Plate Silver Tube Attachments Resonance Rods Tubes O-Rings Ice Cold Water Circulator
0.5mL (Steps 4, 5, 7, and 9) Step 4 Step 5   Step 7   Step 9
1.5mL (Steps 4, 5, 7, and 9) Step 4 Step 5   Step 7   Step 9
10mL (Steps 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9) Step 4   Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 Step 9
15mL (Steps 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9) Step 4   Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 Step 9
50mL (Steps 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9) Step 4   Step 6 Step 7 Step 8 Step 9

STEP 4: Blue Gear Plates
Which gear plate do you need? All tube sizes require gear plates. Which blue gear plate you need is determined by which machine type you have, Type 6 or Type 12/24. Note that Type 24 units take 2 x Type 12 gear plates.

Machine Tube size Blue Gear Plate
Type 6  0.5-15mL

0.5mL, 1.5mL, 50mL

BMB-NG-50-3

Type 12/24  0.5-15mL

BMB-NG-310

0.5mL, 1.5mL, 50mL

BMB-NG310-50

STEP 5: Silver Tube Attachments
Do you need a silver tube attachment? Yes, if you are using 0.5mL and 1.5mL tubes. They must be secured in the machine using silver tube attachments that hold onto a blue gear plate (sold separately). Because the tubes go into the silver tube holder, it does not matter whether the gear plate is 10mL, 15mL, or 50mL.  Note that Type 24 take two Type 12 blue gear plates and two silver tube attachments.

Machine  Tube Size Silver Tube Attachment
Type 6  0.5mL BMB-MAT-05
1.5mL BMB-MAT-15
Type 12/24  0.5mL BMB-MAT-310-05
1.5mL BMB-MAT-310-15

STEP 6: Resonance Rods
Do you need resonance rods? Yes, if you are using 10mL, 15mL, and 50mL tubes. Resonance rods are tube size AND brand specific.
