Human Recombinant Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Protein
Human Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a critical neurotrophic factor essential for supporting neuronal differentiation [i], maturation [ii], and survival [iii]. Known for its neuroprotective properties, BDNF plays a key role in maintaining the health of neurons under stress or adverse conditions. It is involved in the growth of new neurons from neural stem cells, promoting brain plasticity and repair.
BDNF exerts its biological effects by binding to neurons in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. These neurons express tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) and the low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor (p75). Upon binding, BDNF activates multiple signaling pathways, including IRS1/2, PI3K, and Akt, which ultimately lead to the production of CREB and CBP proteins. These proteins are involved in neural plasticity, stress resistance, and cell survival, making BDNF a key player in brain function and resilience.
This protein is particularly useful in research related to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s diseases, as well as neuropsychiatric disorders like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and schizophrenia. It also plays a significant role in studying neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder.
BDNF is synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) as a precursor protein (pro-BDNF) weighing 32-35 kDa. This precursor is processed in the Golgi apparatus and trans-Golgi network (TGN) before being cleaved into the biologically active form of BDNF, a 13.5 kDa mature protein.
